BBC ‘talk with Sky about Gary Lineker blunder’ as details come to light after first Match of the Day episode

The BBC have talked with Sky after they made an error involving Gary Lineker prior to the first episode of Match of the Day this season.

MOTD has undergone some changes, with Lineker no longer host following his departure earlier in the year.

The 64-year-old had originally intended to stay with the broadcaster until thr 2026 World Cup, which takes place in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Following an anti-Semitism row, however, Linker was forced to leave the Beeb entirely – with the former England, Tottenham, Leicester and Barcelona star apologising for his actions.

On Saturday, prior to the airing of the first MOTD episode, the Sky page for the programme had a picture of Lineker.

And the Daily Mail say the Beeb have ‘had a quiet word with Sky’ about the blunder, which was put down to a ‘technical mistake’ in the end.

With Lineker no longer at the BBC, Mark Chapman took charge of presenting duties.

He impressed viewers, having previously hosted Match of the Day 2 on Sunday nights, but Wayne Rooney was criticised by some fans for his punditry work.

Lineker, speaking earlier in the year, insisted that he was unlikely to be watching MOTD following his exit.

However, he then performed a U-turn over the weekend – with the veteran tuning in from his home.

On The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker said he enjoyed what he saw. He said: “I mean, I must say I enjoyed it.

“I went out for dinner then I came home and I got in in time to watch it.

“I thought it was really good. Chappers did a great job.

“And despite all… there was a lot of talk that they were going to change things. And I think you know what it’s like when you get a new guy in as new head of sport thinking he wants to do this, wants to do that.

“But in the end, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

“And I think that was very much the sensible decision and I thought the programme was great.”

Lineker, when quizzed by Alan Shearer, continued: “It wasn’t weird, really.

“I was quite relaxed. I was thinking I haven’t got a three-and-a-half hour journey at the end of the show, but no, I really enjoyed watching it.

“I think that’s the first time that I’ve watched Match of the Day on a Saturday night for… I don’t know how many years.

“I don’t know how many years because the only time I ever missed the show was if I’d get the odd Saturday off to take a holiday so I’d go somewhere.
